Saif Ali Khan has been invited to lead the India Day Parade in New York City as Grand Marshal August 19 to celebrate India's 66th Independence Day.
The decision was announced at a presser at the Consulate General of India. The event was celebrated with a touch of Bollywood with a dance performance.
The parade is organized every year by the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) and each year a Bollywood celebrity or a important person of Indian origin is invited to lead the parade. Bipasha Basu, Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone have done the honors in the past.
The parade moves down Madison Avenue in Manhattan, walks past more than 10 blocks. The event is likely to be attended by 1,00,000 people. The Empire State Building will be lit in India's tricolors. The Indian Consulate will ring the Nasdaq bell on the occasion and Saif will be attending the ceremony.
The next day on August 20, there will be a gala dinner for Saif and other VIPs at Royal Albert's Palace in Fords, New Jersey. Ghazal singer Anup Jalota will perform during the event.
On a different note, Saif is likely to play Jawahar Lal Nehru in a Gurinder Chaddha (Bend It Like Beckham) film on India's partition. The film is centered around Lord Mountbatten's role in overseeing the partition from January 1947 to August 1947. Saif's role is a cameo and he is yet to give his nod.
